THE SURPRISE PARTY

At first I was confused and unimpressed. I knew it was my birthday, but I had no idea if the cheers were for me. Then someone reached out and gave me a card. Then I felt embarrassed, then shy, then grateful and somewhat impressed by their warmth and finally surprised.
You see I had been pulled away under false pretense by my roommate who claimed he had something to show me… indeed! So we strolled down to the gym and stood outside its glass windows as he said, “Look!”
“At what?” I replied, wondering what I was suppose to be looking at aside equipment that I had hardly, if ever used.
“Look at it… don’t you see it?”
At this point I thought Ben was crazy. There was nothing spectacular to see.
“I’m heading back!” I announced.
“No wait,” he said, “Tell me something…”
“What?” I asked.
“Do you like it here?”
A bit of an odd question, but I replied. “I guess!”
The small conversation went on till at some point he looked at his watch as if he was bored with what he started. “Let’s go back,” he said. And that was how we walked back to my surprise party!

NEVER BE AN ONLY CHILD

Never be an only child
This world might drive you wild
When something goes wrong
You are suspect number one
When there’s work to be done
You are employee number one
Never mind if your mother can’t keep a house-help
You will be constantly reminded you are supposed to help
No one to share the chores
The only casualty of the wars
If your mother beats you to submission
A word of it you should not mention
Lest she calls the relative
Your side of the story is not worth being repetitive
And when they grow old
And since it’s only you
Get ready to forfeit your dreams
As is expected you do
And if your parents are hard to please like no other
It’s too late to get another
Pray old age reduces the wild
And their behavior turns mild
I know it’s beyond you

But never be an only child
